Empathy vs Sympathy

Here is a go-to video for understanding the difference between empathy and sympathy, based on a talk given by researcher and auther, Brene Brown. I often recommend this video for clients who struggle to understand what empathy means, or how it look when it shows up.

Whether you are a betrayed partner or someone who broke the trust, healing will best be achieved when you find the capacity for emotional common ground. This can be difficult—nearly impossible—when defenses are high. But as time goes on, there will be opportunities for you to connect your partner’s experience to pain you have known, even if it’s not exactly the same. Healing grows in those vulnerable places.
