The Diswasher Argument

Adapted from a true story in This Is How Your Marriage Ends by Matthew Fray

He loaded the dishwasher the “wrong way.” At least, that’s how she saw it.

She pointed out that the plates were facing the wrong direction, the glasses were tilted, and the spoons were nested.

He rolled his eyes. “It’s just dishes.”

“No,” she said. “It’s not just dishes. It’s that I ask, and you don’t listen.”

At first, he was defensive. Later, he read a blog post someone shared about how failing to fix the little things makes your partner feel alone in the big ones. That hit him hard.

So, the next night, he tried again—slower this time, more careful. The plates were all facing the same way, the glasses were upright, and there was no spoon nesting.

She walked in and stared.

He shrugged. “I’m trying to love you… one bowl at a time.”

She didn’t say anything. But she leaned in and kissed his shoulder
