The Sandwich Truce
Adapted from a true story in "After the Affair" by Janis Abrahms Spring, Ph.D.
In a session months after the affair disclosure, a couple described how their therapist advised them to rebuild trust not through big moments, but through tiny acts of care. They were still cold toward each other at home, barely speaking. Then one day, while packing his lunch, the husband quietly made a second sandwich and set it on the counter.
No note. No eye contact. Just… the sandwich.
The next day, she packed his favorite chips with a sticky note: “Still mad. But this is a peace offering.”
The therapist called it “the sandwich truce.”
That became their quiet ritual for weeks. They still fought. They still cried. But they also packed lunch for each other.
Sometimes, grace can be offered between slices of wheat bread.
